Godotes #12 - Gotm.io

Gotm.io's mini-report. How's the Godot-exclusive platform doing?

Gotm's Twitter account boast about being "The #GodotEngine Platform!", and it's entirely deserved.

The platform, a four-dev project run by Macaroni Studios, a web/app development company, is awesome. As simple as that.

"Gotm [...] is pretty much as close to a one-click publishing solution for hosting Godot games online as you are going to find"

I don't think many people receiving this newsletter are going to be unfamiliar with Gotm.io, but here's a quick rundown just in case:

Launched in December 2019, Gotm is a Godot exclusive platform trying to make it easier for devs to publish, promote, and profit from their games

In the future, they have plans for premium services, Switch publishing, a new design, and a bunch of other things

Gotm does a good job telling its own story and goals, and if you're interested, you can check it here:

Also, this guys run one of the best newsletters I follow (coughcoughmuchbetterthanthisonecoughcough) and I can't recommend it enough. You can catch the issues on Gotm.io news section

Let's see those numbers!

Gotm team was kind enough to send me this data, but the issue was supposed to come out earlier, so the data is a couple of weeks old, hence, August is incomplete. Still, I think is safe to assume the month did just fine.

Gotm had 1409 games published as of August 16th. ~54.4% of them public, ~45.6% privates. But wait, there's more!

Platforms numbers:

  • Desktop: 1061. ~63.4% public
  • Tablet: 384. ~60.7% public
  • Mobile: 428. ~58% public

The last six months, even only counting half of August, saw a ~40.3%  increase compared to the previous six months in total games, 135.5% in public games.

Tags

Other than the Gles2 tag, used by ~31% of the games on the platform, the tags are fairly close to Itch's tags, with 2D (~9.7%) Platformer and Pixel art are all in the top tags.

Gotm.io Jam

The first three jams were hosted on Itch.io, and clearly got a boost because of it. Since jam number 4, the event was moved to Gotm.io's own system, and it's slowly growing back up. The latest jam is always on gotm.io/jam/gotm-jam. Right now, jam #8 is still going on, with 2 days and 5 hours left, at the time of sending. 100 dollars in prizes, as always.

Overall, if all the things the have planed come into fruition, Gotm.io will undoubtedly become even more of a central platform in the Godot ecosystem. Maybe something close to the Unity Distribution Portal? That would be something.

So far at least, with those numbers, everything is coming up Gotm.

📰 Godot news round-up

  • Stop Waiting for Godot game jam - Run by Terry Cavanagh, creator of VVVVVV, Super Hexagon, and Dicey Dungeons, among others.
Having a seasoned developer behind the wheel has brought a lot of attention to the jam, with more than a thousand participants already.
The jam will run for four days to give everyone a chance to compete during this weekend.
  • New developments regarding Sonic Colors: Ultimate and Godot. Yes, they did use it, and they (Blind Squirrel, the studio behind the port) apologise for not crediting the engine
  • "Add a Godot Engine tag" suggestion on twitch is now "Under consideration" - With 820 votes, sitting and number 7 of the top suggestions on twitch right now, and during the same week the category "Software and Game Development" was created/reinstated, things are looking promising. Fingers crossed! 🤞🏽
  • A tale of two crowdfunding campaigns: Spindle and Bittersweet Birthday.
Spindle's Kickstarter campaign has reached a successful conclusion, getting "€59,091 pledged of €55,000 goal".
On the other hand, with 6 days left, Bittersweet Birthday's campaign is still 15% away from reaching its goal of $23,000 ($19,635 USD right now). This is a Fixed Goal campaign, so it works just like a Kickstarter one: If the goal is not reached, they get nothing.
  • User ElectronicBlueberry made a plugin for creating custom fonts from images
